Programs at the Institute of Allied Medical Professions

The School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography at the Institute of Allied Medical Professions has state-of-the-art ultrasound laboratories. Students learn to use scanners for general ultrasound testing and specialized procedures, such as color flow imaging.

Certificates in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

This school offers certificate programs in three areas of study: general diagnostic medical sonography, cardiac medical sonography and vascular medical sonography. All programs include didactic instruction, hands-on laboratory training and a clinical externship or internship. Students have the option of enrolling in daytime or evening programs. The general sonography program includes cardiac and vascular sonography courses and can be completed in 15 months during the day or in 17 months during the evening.

The certificate in cardiac sonography, also known as cardiac ultrasound or echocardiography, provides students with instruction on how to capture 2-dimensional images of the heart. Students enrolled in this program can earn a certificate in 13 months. For the vascular sonography certificate program, students complete a 13-month training program that deals with using ultrasound scanners to view images of veins and arteries.

Program at the New York Methodist Hospital (NMH) Center for Allied Health Education

The School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography at NMH Center for Allied Health Education offers a 2-year ultrasound technology certificate program. The program equips students with the clinical and patient care skills necessary for entry-level positions in general sonography. This ultrasound program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Certificate of Completion in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Students enrolled in the sonography program at NMH take clinical and didactic courses and participate in rotations at doctor's offices, imaging centers and hospitals. Subjects covered in this program include abdominal sonography, echocardiography, medical ethics and law, quality management and vascular ultrasound. Upon completion of this program, eligible students can sit for certification exams with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Students seeking to pursue further training can transfer up to 60 credits towards a bachelor's degree at an affiliated college.

Program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Through the State University of New York's (SUNY) College of Health Related Professions, students can complete coursework in diagnostic medical imaging. This 2-year program is CAAHEP-accredited and is designed for students seeking to complete their junior and senior year courses towards earning a Bachelor of Science degree.

Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Imaging

At SUNY Downstate Medical Center, students can learn about various types of ultrasound specialties. Ultrasound raining is provided in areas such as adult and pediatric echocardiography, abdomen, obstetrics and gynecology, small parts and vascular ultrasound. The program also involves basic coursework in gross and sectional anatomy, as well as several lab courses. In the final year of study, students complete field practicums to gain real-world clinical experience. Students may also elect to participate in a training experience at the Brooklyn Free Clinic.

Other School Options
