City College of San Francisco
The City College of San Francisco (CCSF) offers a program in adult cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) through its School of Health and Physical Education. The program is offered at the John Adams Campus and the Phelan Campus. In addition to learning concepts in the classroom, students develop professional skills by completing clinical work at an affiliated healthcare facility.
Cardiovascular Technician/Echocardiography Technician Certificate
Students need to complete 68 units of coursework before program completion. This program helps students prepare for cardiac ultrasound-related certifications through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Courses include ultrasound physics, echocardiography studies, cardiovascular skills and cardiac abnormalities. The program credits can also count towards an associate's degree at CCSF.
Students in Foothill College's diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) programs learn ultrasound concepts through in-class training and clinical work. Before students can enroll in this school's DMS programs, they need to complete an allied health associate's and/or bachelor's degree program. The diagnostic medical sonography programs prepare students to take related certification exams offered by ARDMS. This is the only school with CAAHEP-accredited sonography programs in the San Jose area.
Certificate of Achievement in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Courses offered include obstetrics, gynecology, pathology, patient care, vascular sonography, sonographic principles and sectional anatomy. Units earned from this program can be transferred to this school's diagnostic medical sonography associate's degree program. A total of 98 units are needed to complete this program.
Associate in Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Students need to complete the same courses found in the diagnostic medical sonography certificate program, as well as complete general education courses. Students need to complete 128 units of coursework to fulfill graduation requirements.
Lincoln University only offers degree programs in the fields of business administration and diagnostic imaging. Although most concepts are taught in the classroom, students in the ultrasound technician and diagnostic imaging programs encounter hands-on training through laboratory courses, practicums and externships. Students can choose between concentrations in vascular ultrasound or echocardiography.
Ultrasound Technician Certificate
Students need to complete 87 credit hours to finish this program. Both concentrations require students to pass courses in ultrasound principles, human biology, medical terminology, anatomy, OB/GYN ultrasound techniques, small parts scanning and abdomen ultrasound techniques. The vascular ultrasound concentration covers transcranial scanning, abdomen and peripheral vascular Doppler techniques, hemodynamics and vascular anatomy. Students enrolled in the echocardiography concentration encounter courses in echo imaging, arrhythmias interpretation and echo scanning.
Associate of Science in Diagnostic Imaging
This 77-unit program requires courses in ultrasound protocols, medical terminology, OB/GYN and abdomen scanning, small parts ultrasound techniques, anatomy, ultrasound principles and physiology. Students following the vascular ultrasound concentration curriculum take courses in hemodynamics, peripheral and abdomen vascular Doppler techniques, vascular scanning and vascular anatomy. Echocardiography concentration courses include echo scanning, echo imaging and arrhythmias interpretation.
Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Imaging
Many of the same topics covered in the associate's degree program are found in this program. Students also need to pass advanced general diagnostic sonography, core and concentration courses. This program requires 45 units of general education courses to fulfill the 123-unit requirement. After graduating from this program, students qualify to take the ARDMS' national board exam.
