Programs at Hillsborough Community College
Hillsborough CC features a DMS program through the Health, Wellness, and Sports Technologies Department. Before enrolling, applicants are required to complete courses in anatomy, physiology, English, algebra, and physics; science courses must include labs. Once accepted to the program, students also need to have current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification, pass a drug screening, and meet health requirements.
Associate of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography Technology
Full-time students can complete this 72-credit hour program in 2 years. In addition to in-class training, students can expect to participate in skills development through clinical practicums and labs. Courses cover basic sonography, surgical diseases, cross-sectional anatomy, sonography instrumentation, and sonography physics. Students also receive specialized training in obstetric, gynecological, and abdominal sonography. This program is offered only during the day.
Programs at Polk State College
Polk's DMS program is housed at the Airside Center on the Lakeland campus. The program accepts students once a year for a January start. Participants need to pass prerequisite courses in algebra, composition, physics, human anatomy, and physiology with a grade of at least C. They must also pass a drug screening and background check, be certified in CPR, meet health and immunization requirements, and submit an Affidavit of Moral Character.
Associate of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
This program totals 72 credit hours and trains students in sonography through clinical practice and coursework. Classes are provided both day and evening. Students explore topics such as sonographic imaging protocols and procedures, medical terminology, obstetrics and gynecology, cross-sectional anatomy, abdominal sonography, sonographic physics, and neurosonology.
