Essential Information

Out of Utah's 21 public and private not-for-profit schools, only 2 have diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) programs. Students may choose to earn a certificate, requiring two years to complete and the previous completion of a degree program in a related field, or a bachelor's degree in DMS. Hands-on training and practicum requirements are included in such programs, though individuals interested in earning certification will additionally need to have job experience in the field prior to taking the exam.

Career Requirements

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that DMS workers may have a better chance at finding a job after earning a professional certification. The State of Utah doesn't currently require DMS workers to be licensed.

The following are profiles for the two schools in Utah that offer medical sonography programs and a comparative table for the institutions, providing tuition information and school setting data.

Salt Lake Community College

Salt Lake Community College offers a 2-year DMS certificate program at the West Jordan Campus. In order to enroll in this program, prospective DMS students need to complete a patient care-focused associate's degree program or a bachelor's degree program in any field. Students can also be considered for enrollment by passing prerequisite courses in elementary physics, algebra, communications, college biology, human anatomy and human physiology. Prior to applying to the DMS program, students need to pass a sonography overview course.

The certificate program requires courses in sonographic physics and instrumentation, patient care, abdominal and vascular sonography, obstetrics and gynecology, healthcare ethics, sectional anatomy and medical terminology. Hands-on training is provided by laboratory components and clinical work. Graduates qualify to sit for American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) exams that can lead to the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) and Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) certifications. Those who enter this program without earning a bachelor's degree or a patient care-focused associate's degree need to work 12-months in a full-time DMS position to be eligible to sit for ARDMS certification exams.

Weber State University

Ogden-based Weber State University has a DMS bachelor's degree program that can be finished with 120 credit hours. Applicants to the program must already be a registered radiologic technologist through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. The program also accepts students who work in school-approved equivalent positions.

Students can follow the medical, vascular or cardiac DMS track. The medical track includes gynecologic, obstetric, superficial structure and abdominal sonography courses. Cardiac track courses cover protocols and techniques for cardiac scanning. The courses in the vascular track train students in proper vascular scanning techniques. Regardless of the DMS track, students encounter courses in sectional anatomy, sonographic principles and instrumentation, quality assurance, patient care, imaging pathophysiology, medical law and medical ethics. The DMS program also requires students to complete clinical work, laboratory components and a thesis.
