How to Select an Undergraduate Counseling and Psychology School

Psychology undergraduate students can earn either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Both 4-year undergraduate psychology degree programs require 36-42 credit hours of psychology courses, most in upper-level courses. Psychologists study aspects of the human mind, including emotions, perception, relationships and personality, and undergraduate preparation usually requires labs and experimental psychology courses. Prospective psychology students may want to consider the research and lab facilities that a school makes available to undergraduates, as well as internship opportunities to prepare for work after graduation.

A B.S. in Psychology is geared toward research-oriented undergraduate studies and requires more math and statistics. Students may consider a Bachelor of Science in Psychology to prepare for research-based graduate study in a Ph.D. program. The B.A. is less research-based, and psychology undergraduates may choose a B.A. program to get a wider understanding of psychology, preparing for a professional master's degree program in therapy and counseling, or less research-intensive graduate school programs.

Undergraduate programs in counseling are uncommon and generally focus on a specific type of counseling, such as substance abuse counseling or community counseling. Undergraduate students looking for a counseling degree program should look for ones with specializations that matches their career goals. Many states require licensed counselors to hold at least a master's degree, so undergraduate counseling may give preference to programs that allow seamless transfer to a graduate degree program in counseling.
