There are a handful of schools in Utah that provide both basic and intermediate training in emergency medical technology (EMT). Utah Valley University (UVU) offers a firefighter recruit candidate certificate and a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Services Administration. Dixie State College of Utah (DSC) offers certificates in basic and intermediate EMT.
Utah Valley University's Emergency Medical Technology Programs
Located in Orem, UT, Utah Valley University (UVU) awards various undergraduate and master degrees. Opportunities in Emergency Medical Technology - Basic (EMT - B), EMT - Intermediate, nursing and fire science are included in UVU's array of academic programs. Each emergency services concentration is offered at UVU's Utah Fire and Rescue Academy (UFRA) and prepares students for careers as firefighters, fire inspectors and public safety officers.
Certificate in Firefighter Recruit Candidate
This 31-credit program explores different types of EMT - B skills and fundamentals, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), defibrillation, patient triage and the legal issues relating to emergency care. Students also learn how to use AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators), ropes, ladders, fire extinguishers, hoses and nozzles. Additionally, courses teach students how to safely handle hazardous materials (hazmat). Graduates may pursue EMT - B certification through the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), a part of Utah's Department of Health.
Associate in Applied Science in Emergency Services - Emphasis in Fire Officer
UVU's 63-credit associate degree program in emergency services offers a concentration in fire officer training. The fire officer concentration begins with the rudiments of EMT - B courses, which educates students in automatic defibrillation, CPR and airway management. The syllabus also considers the characteristics of fires and the techniques used to control them. Further topics explore the methods of fire inspection and fire prevention.
General education requirements include courses in mathematics, science, humanities and English. Graduates can also seek an EMT - B certification through Utah's Bureau of EMS.
Associate in Applied Science in Emergency Services - Emphasis in Wildland Fire Management
Students of this 63-credit discipline devote 47 credits toward wilderness firefighting courses. As an elective, students may choose to become certified at the EMT - Intermediate level. This certification program covers advanced airway support, intravenous (IV) care, emergency medications and the methods used to determine a patient's heart rate.
Program enrollees must complete three internships. Classes in English and biology help to fulfill the curriculum's general education requirements.
Bachelor of Science in Emergency Services Administration
Students in this program must complete 31 credits toward emergency care or 25 credits toward emergency management. Both tracks contain opportunities for students at the EMT - Basic and EMT - Intermediate levels. Students are educated in CPR, triaging, advanced airway assistance, drug administration, IV care and the techniques utilized in determining a patient's cardiac rhythm.
Students pursuing the concentration in emergency care are exposed to the responsibilities of a paramedic, such as the treatments for drug overdoses, burns and broken bones. They also study nasal and oral intubation, sterilization methods and childbirth.
Those selecting the emergency management emphasis learn the duties of an emergency services manager. Course topics include the National Incident Management System (NIMS), disaster preparation techniques and the legislative aspects relating to emergency services.
