Video Editing Degree and Certification Program Overviews
Associate's degrees in video production and editing are an excellent way to break into media careers or to prepare for an advanced media degree program. Read on to find out more about what can be expected from these degrees.
Associate's Degree in Video and Media Production
While video editing is a skill learned in many advanced media degrees, an associate's degree in video and media production focuses on video editing as a central, technical skill. Additionally, students are trained on all aspects of video production. Most importantly, students learn the technical skills necessary to work in a video production studio. Additional skills taught can include authoring, storyboarding, concept development, lighting or motion graphics editing.
Most programs are 1-2 years in length, although some can take up to three years to complete. Because programs typically require students to work in a production lab for most classes, and video editing equipment and software is expensive, programs are usually not offered online. As a vocational degree, most programs help students develop a demo reel to use as a portfolio, which is often required when interviewing for job openings. These demo reels are a compilation of a student's work and proof of hands-on training with standard video editing equipment and software.
Educational Prerequisites
As an associate-level degree, most programs do not have prerequisites beyond a high school diploma or GED. Some programs require standardized test scores, but the majority do not. The strongest students usually have previous experience in video editing or backgrounds in computer science or information technology.
