How to Write an Effective Admissions Essay Video Overview
- Importance of a Well Written Essay
- A well written essay is very important to your college application.
- If a student is on the borderline or is pitted against another equally qualified applicant, the admissions essay can be a deal maker or deal breaker.
- Tips for a Quality Essay
- Follow the directions. If the application asks you to answer three questions using no more than 1,000 words, do not write 1,500. Ignoring directions may mean not getting into the school of your choice.
- Make sure you answer the questions or follow the essay prompts. If you get an open ended prompt, this does not mean to write about anything. Write about one strategically chosen topic that highlights or explains what is in the application itself. Don't write about random topics. Instead, take one aspect of the application, such as the fact that you did not do so well in freshman biology, and expound on what happened. Tell a story about it so that the admissions people get to know you better.
- Final Tips
- Write in your own voice.
- Read it aloud to those you trust to tell you the truth gently.
- Don't try to be wildly funny or extremely creative, and avoid overly used phrases.
- Do not be cute with font or format options.
- Don't manufacture hardships, but if you have experienced one, write about it honestly and specifically.
- Proofread and edit, and do not rely on spellcheckers.
