The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also called MIT, is located along the Charles River in urban Cambridge and just a short distance from Harvard University. In 2008 MIT's undergraduate program ranked #7 in the nation in the America's Best Colleges report.
In addition to its high overall ranking, MIT is one of the leading research institutions in the world. Its engineering program and business program rank #1 and #2 in the nation, respectively.
MIT's curriculum is designed to provide students with a strong scientific, technical and humanistic foundation, while encouraging them to develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills. To accomplish this, students seeking a B.S. degree complete a core requirement that includes science, mathematics, humanities, arts and social sciences.
MIT awards bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in 32 academic departments through five schools and one college. With 36 percent of undergraduates majoring in engineering, it is by far the most popular academic program at MIT. Other top majors include computer science, physical sciences, biological sciences and business. Pre-professional programs are offered in law and medicine.
With a 'most selective' admission process, MIT has a 13 percent acceptance rate. Typical incoming freshmen have SAT test scores between 1,380 and 1,560 and 97 percent of students graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school classes.
