Programs at El Centro College

El Centro College is part of the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) and offers workforce education programs, liberal arts courses, continuing education and distance learning. The DCCCD system features over 350 career and 50 academic programs. Prospective nurses can pursue a vocational nursing certificate, perioperative nursing enhanced skills certificate and nursing associate's degree.

Vocational Nursing Certificate

This 12-month vocational nursing certificate program teaches students to care for chronically or severely ill patients. The curriculum, approved by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners, consists of lectures, labs and clinical education programs. Students develop basic nursing skills and learn about medication, neonatal care, mental illness and pediatrics. After completing the certificate program and passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN), students can work as licensed vocational nurses.

Programs at Navarro College

Navarro College offers nursing and health training on its main campus in Corsicana, TX. In addition to nursing certificates and degrees, students can also pursue health career training programs in medical laboratory technology and occupational therapy.

Licensed Vocational Nursing Certificate of Completion

This 1-year program provides students with vocational nursing skills and training. Students are taught how to care for newborn infants and pregnant women, administer medication and communicate appropriately with patients and fellow health care staff. The curriculum includes regular coursework and hands-on clinical experiences.

Coursework also covers growth and development, mental health and medical-surgical nursing. Before enrolling, students must take an entrance exam, pass a criminal background check and attend an informational discussion. Graduates are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN to obtain licensure to practice in the state of Texas.
