Welding and Joining Technology Diploma

This program teaches students the skills needed to acquire a job in the welding industry. Students learn blueprint reading and various welding techniques, such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, overhead shielded metal arc and oxyfuel cutting. The curriculum of this 50-credit-hour program also includes basic skills courses in English and math.

Georgia Piedmont Technical College

Georgia Piedmont Technical College offers 6 welding certificate programs and 1 diploma program. Each certificate program trains students in a specialty within the welding and joining technology field.

Welding and Joining Technology Certificate

Georgia Piedmont Technical College offers the following certificates: basic shielded metal arc welder, gas metal arc welder, gas tungsten arc welder, ornamental iron fabricator, oxyfuel technician and pipe welder. Each of these welding certificate programs, except for the pipe welder program, requires students to complete an introductory course in welding technology and a course on oxyfuel cutting, in addition to a course on the topic named in the certificate's title.

The ornamental iron fabricator program includes a plasma cutting course, and the oxyfuel technician program requires the student to complete courses on oxyacetylene welding and plasma cutting. The pipe welder program provides training on advanced gas tungsten arc welding and fabrication processes.

Welding and Joining Technology Diploma

This diploma program blends general education courses with welding technology content. Students complete introductory courses on welding technology and computers and are trained in different welding techniques. Required technical courses cover horizontal and vertical shielded metal arc welding, gas metal and gas tungsten arc welding, blueprint reading and preparation for industrial qualification.

Gwinnett Technical College

Students who want to prepare for careers in the welding industry have several programs to choose from at Gwinnett Technical College. The college offers 4 certificate programs and 1 diploma program in the welding technology field.

Welding and Joining Technology Certificate

Gwinnett Technical College provides certificate programs in gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding and advanced shielded metal arc welding. The courses completed in these certificate programs can be applied to the Welding and Joining Technology Diploma program. The first 3 certificate programs listed require students to complete an introduction to welding technology course, an oxyfuel cutting course and an elective, in addition to a course that trains them in the certificate's specialty.

Students must complete prerequisites for admission to the advanced shielded metal arc welding program. These prerequisites are introductory welding technology, oxyfuel cutting and flat shielded metal arc welding. After satisfying the prerequisites, students must complete the following 3 courses to receive the certificate: horizontal shielded metal arc welding, vertical shielded metal arc welding and overhead shielded metal arc welding.

Welding and Joining Technology Diploma

This diploma program takes at least 3 semesters to complete. The curriculum covers a range of welding and joining methods, including flat shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding. Students also take a blueprint reading course, an oxyfuel cutting class and their choice of elective. Graduates are qualified for employment as welding and joining technicians.
