Wentworth Institute of Technology's Welding Program
Located on a 35-acre campus in the heart of Boston, the Wentworth Institute of Technology offers more than 15 bachelor's degrees in addition to continuing education and cooperative education programs.
Certificate of Completion in Welding
Welding involves connecting metal parts that can be found in manufacturing and a number of other industries, such as shipbuilding or automobile manufacturing and in the construction of structures, such as buildings and bridges.
Wentworth Institute of Technology offers three welding classes as part of its workforce training and development department. Students may take the classes individually or as a series to earn a Certificate of Achievement in Welding. Completion of the classes prepares individuals for entry-level welding positions in a variety of industries.
An introductory welding course familiarizes students with the fundamentals of welding. Students learn how to weld common joints in different positions, such as flat and vertical. Various welding theories, shielded metal arc welding, oxyacetylene gas welding and brazing are covered in this introductory class. Students also practice joint welding and produce a pressure vessel.
In the gas tungsten arc (TIG) and gas metal arc (MIG) welding course, students learn to weld ferrous and nonferrous metals using TIG, MIG and fluxed core arc welding techniques. Lectures also address types of metals used in welding, metal testing methods and welder certification.
The advanced course in arc welding covers procedures used for vertical and overhead welding with mild steel electrodes and low hydrogen are the focus of this class. Students also learn standard industry arc welding practices required for certification.
Although the profession as a whole is not expected to grow in the 2008-2018 decade, there will continue to be good job opportunities for welders who have completed training in the latest technology, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, (www.bls.gov).
