Programs at Houston Community College

Weekend, day and evening course options are available for welding students at this school. Individuals can enroll in both basic and advanced certificate programs. Placement testing is needed before starting either program.

Basic Welding Helper Certificate

Students can earn the basic welding helper certificate in one semester. The classes for this program cover issues like industrial mathematics, welding fundamentals, welding using multiple processes, blueprint reading and critical thinking. The program amounts to 16 semester units worth of courses.

Advanced Welding Certificate

The advanced welding certificate program requires 40 semester units of work and takes three semesters to complete. The first semester of this program is similar to the basic welding helper certificate program. From there, however, students can take coursework in pipe welding, gas tungsten arc welding and gas metal arc welding.

Programs at San Jacinto Community College

The welding programs at San Jacinto Community College are designed to prepare students for necessary industry certification tests. Five different certificate programs, as well as an associate degree program, are offered at the school.

Occupational Certificate in Welding Stick Pipe

Both introductory and advanced courses in shield metal arc welding are available in this program. There are also intermediate and advanced classes for pipe welding. At the end of the program, students may be able to pass tests related to pipe welding as issued by fabrication companies and the welding industry.

Occupational Certificate in Welding - Art Welding

Students who are interested in using welding in an artistic manner can pursue this program. Sculptures, yard ornaments and other art projects are created by students. It is important to note that this program doesn't prepare students for industrial welding.

Structural Welder Certificate of Technology

Shielded metal arc welding is the main focus of this certificate program. This program only requires three courses. This includes an introductory course to shielded metal arc welding and an advanced class in the subject. Additionally, a cooperative education experience is required.

Gas Shielded Welding Certificate of Technology

Entry-level experience can be acquired by students who complete this program. Gas tungsten arc welding and gas metal arc welding are the two major techniques covered in this program, which should take two terms to complete.

Combination Welder Certificate of Technology

The two welding focuses of this certificate program are gas tungsten arc welding and shielded metal arc welding. This program is ideal for students who are looking for intermediate and advanced experience in welding. Credits that are earned in this program can be applied toward the school's associate degree program in welding.

Associate of Applied Science in Welding Technology

Along with the welding courses in this program, students must take several general education classes. For the welding aspect of the program, students learn about shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding. The entire program is usually completed in four terms.

Programs at Lee College

Certificate and associate degree programs at Lee College are provided in both welding technology and inspection. Students have access to five welding laboratories on campus.

Certificate of Completion in Welding Technology

Students must complete 38 semester credit hours to earn this certificate. The program normally takes four semesters to finish. In the first two semesters, the coursework covers blueprint reading, welding safety, tools and equipment, shielded metal arc welding, gas arc welding and welding metallurgy. The final half of the curriculum covers pipe welding, welding codes and gas tungsten arc welding.

Certificate of Completion in Welding Inspection Technology

This program starts off with courses on magnetic particle and liquid penetrant testing, blueprint reading and welding metallurgy. From there, students can learn about welding codes. Additionally, students must take a class to help them prepare for the welding inspector certification examination. The certificate program is 21 semester credit hours in length.

Associate of Applied Science in Welding Technology

Several introductory welding classes are offered in processes like pipe welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding. Most of those courses have advanced portions as well. Other topics that are covered in this program's coursework include technical math applications, technical algebra and oral communications. The program requires students to earn 62-63 credit hours worth of work.

Other School Options

Lone Star College System is about 33 miles from downtown Houston and has several welding associate degree and certificate programs. Similar certificate programs are available at College of the Mainland, which is 35 miles from Houston's downtown area.
