Los Angeles Welding Schools

In the Los Angeles area, students can find welding courses and programs at community colleges within a 25-minute drive of downtown. This article gets an overview of three schools' training programs and also includes a table of stats about each institution. A couple of additional college options are mentioned as well.

  • Los Angeles Trade Technical College is around two miles from central L.A. and has certificate and associate's degree programs in welding.
  • About 16 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles is El Camino College, which also offers a certificate and an associate degree program in the field.
  • Numerous specializations are available in the welding certificate program at Cerritos College, which is located a little over 17 miles south of L.A.'s downtown area.

Los Angeles Trade Technical College

Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC) is part of the Los Angeles Community College District, which is the country's largest community college district. LATTC is a Certified Welding Test Center; students in the welding program can complete certification exams right at the school.

Certificate of Achievement in Welding Gas and Electric: Construction Technologies

A minimum of 24 units have to be completed to earn the construction technologies certificate. Students are required to take several gas and electric welding courses, in addition to tungsten inert-gas welding classes. The rest of the program is made up of several technical classes on welding, as well as courses in blueprint reading and applied mathematics.

Associate of Science in Welding Gas and Electric

Students who aren't interested in taking general education classes can pursue a Certificate of Achievement instead of an associate's degree in this program. Requirements for the welding gas and electric major include applied mathematics, blueprint reading, electric welding, acetylene cutting, brazing and welding. There is also a class on inert-gas welding.

El Camino College

El Camino College offers courses and certificate and associate's degree programs in welding. A graduation-with-honors option is available to students who maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher. Courses can be taken during the day or in the evening.

Certificate of Achievement in Welding

Students pursuing a certificate in welding at El Camino College may choose to complete a 32-unit program or a 44-unit program. Students in the 44-unit program take additional classes in technical mathematics, mechanical drafting and general metals. Welding classes available to students include welding processes, basic welding technology, structural fabrication and blueprint reading.

Associate of Science in Welding

In this 60-unit program, students complete coursework similar to the welding certificate program, in addition to general education classes. Welding courses include arc welding certification, gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding.

Cerritos College

Cerritos College offers courses and a certificate program in welding. Faculty and staff are experienced welders, and some are certified welding inspectors. Students may take courses to become certified and licensed by the city of Los Angeles and the state of California.

Certificate of Achievement in Welding

The basic core classes in welding at this school consist of the following: welding blueprint reading, beginning arc welding and welding shop math. There are also courses on safety and the welding environment, as well as welding fundamentals. Students can specialize in arc welding, pipe welding, welding fabrication and layout or gas tungsten arc welding. The rest of a student's coursework varies based on which specialization is chosen.
