Welding Classes in New Jersey

There are over 70 public and private, not-for-profit schools in New Jersey. However, only 8 of these schools offer welding courses. Some classes are offered on an individual basis, while others are a part of a larger certificate or degree program.

Bergen Community College

At Bergen Community College in Paramus, students can take welding technology classes or earn a Certificate of Achievement in Welding Technology. The certificate program requires students to earn 12 credits with classes in drafting, materials processing and fabrication. The welding technology I course goes over the basics of soldering, welding and brazing. Students are educated on welding safety as well. The welding technology II class expands upon the techniques covered in the first course.

Gloucester County College

A metal fabrications and welding fundamentals class is available at Gloucester County College in Sewell. This is a 24-hour course that can be finished in 3 days. Students start off learning about metal inert gas welding, shielded gases and steel fillers. The lectures for this course go over the proper use of safety equipment like gloves and goggles.

Monmouth County Vocational School District

Individual welding courses can be taken in Neptune at Monmouth County Vocational School District. The welding I and II courses are each 72 credit hours and meet for 24 sessions. These classes are typically held during the evening. Students in the welding I class go over flat, vertical and overhead welding positions. The welding II course covers pipe welding, basic cutting/welding and pipe joint fitting.

Montclair State University

Montclair State University, named after the city of Montclair, offers introductory, intermediate and advanced classes in brazing and welding. These courses are a part of the elective options for the fine arts bachelor's degree program. The welding courses are associated with the sculpture concentration. Each welding course is 4 hours and contains a studio requirement.

Morris County Vocational School District

Students can find high school and continuing education programs in welding technology at Morris County Vocational School District in Denville. Helmet and gloves are necessary items that students must purchase. The continuing education program in welding takes 2 years to complete. The first year of the program goes over welding symbols, welding science and print interpretation. In the second year of the program, students can learn about flux core arc welding, gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding. The high school program requires a similar curriculum, but is geared toward students in 11th or 12th grades.

Ocean County Vocational-Technical School

Students in Toms River can pursue a welding program at Ocean County Vocational-Technical School. Students must complete 900 hours in 2 years. Upon graduation, students can apply for certification with the American Welding Society. During this hands-on program, students can explore flux core arc welding, plasma cutting, oxy-fuel gas cutting, gas tungsten arc welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas metal arc welding.

Ramapo College of New Jersey

Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah has a bronze casting and welding course that can be taken as a part of the sculpture concentration for the Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts program. This studio course focuses on exploring self-expression through the medium of welding and sculpting.

Warren County Community College

Students can take basic and advanced welding classes at Warren County Community College in Washington. The basic class goes over MIG welding and fabrication, while the advanced course concentrates on shielded metal arc and TIG welding. These courses are normally held on Sundays. Demonstrations are conducted during class so students can learn the proper procedures and safety techniques for particular styles of welding.
