Beginning and advanced levels of welding programs are available; students must have completed or prove themselves proficient in lower-level skills to enroll in advanced programs. Welding is a field highly dependent on the development of hands-on skills; some programs may include very little classroom instruction. Associate's degrees include general education courses.

Found in Logan, the Bridgerland Applied Technology College offers two options within the welding program. The standard program consists of 1,410 hours that can be completed in about 8-12 months. The coursework covers welding safety, welding metallurgy, welding math and electrical fundamentals. The pipe welding specialization consists of 330 hours and contains two courses.

Mountainland Applied Technology College

To enter into the welding technology program at Mountainland Applied Technology College's Orem campus, students have to meet with the welding instructor and a counselor for the training agreement. Students are required to get hands-on experience with flux cored arc welding, gas metal arc welding and shielded metal arc welding.

The production program is intended for students who are looking for entry-level welding positions, and the advanced program is recommended for students who want a wide range of employment options.

Salt Lake Community College

Salt Lake City is home to Salt Lake Community College, and students can pursue associate's degrees in welding technology and welding fabrication and inspection. The welding technology associate's degree program is an apprenticeship opportunity that is available on an as-needed basis. The welding fabrication and inspection associate's degree requires at least 66 credit hours and takes four semesters to finish. In addition to various welding techniques, students in the welding fabrication and inspection program also learn how to use brakes, drills, shears and rolls as well as how to understand welding layouts and fabrications. Students who don't want an associate's degree can choose the school's welding certificate program, which primarily focuses on developing welding skills.

Throughout the program's 63 semester hours, students learn welding techniques used in construction, repair and fabrication. The program provides instruction on how to work with non-ferrous and ferrous materials as well as pipes and plates.

Students have access to the welding laboratory at this school from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on Mondays through Thursdays. The basic program covers GMAW, SMAW, FCAW and GTAW welding and includes additional courses in welding safety and welding math. The advanced program includes many of the same courses as the basic program, but students get to take additional courses covering the different types of welding as well as welding metallurgy basics and electrical fundamentals.
