Virginia is home to over 90 schools and universities. Roughly 20 of those schools have welding classes available. The 10 largest of those schools are presented below.
Central Virginia Community College
Central Virginia Community College is in Lynchburg and welding majors there can pursue a career studies certificate or an associate's degree. The career studies certificate in welding program here is 28 course credits and requires students to study welding metallurgy, gas metal arc welding, inert gas welding, pipe welding and shielded metal arc welding. There are also courses on metals and heat treatment and welding blueprint reading. The associate's degree program has similar coursework, but requires 68 credits to graduate form due to additional requirements.
Danville Community College
A welding technology certificate as well as a welding career studies certificate are available at Danville Community College in Danville. The certificate option is 40 credits while the career studies certificate is 19 credits. Arc welding and inert gas welding are topics that are explored in several classes in the career studies certificate program. In the certificate program, the curriculum includes those welding techniques in addition to covering technical report writing, welding metallurgy and pipe welding.
J Sargeant Reynolds Community College
A career studies certificate in welding can be earned in Richmond at J Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Once accepted into the program, students begin coursework on welding fundamentals and arc welding. From there, courses on inert gas welding, welding metallurgy and inert gas welding have to be taken. The 18 credit program finishes with a class on welding interpretation and drawing.
John Tyler Community College
Students in Chester at John Tyler Community College can enroll in a welding program as a certificate, a career studies certificate or an associate's degree. The certificate programs have similar curriculums. However, students in the standard certificate program get to fulfill some general education requirements. The welding classes at this school consist of the following: inert gas welding, gas metal arc welding, oxy-fuel cutting and welding, machine blueprint reading and shielded metal arc welding. The welding programs here take 3 to 4 semesters to finish depending on the program.
New River Community College
New River Community College in Dublin offers a welding certificate. In this 3 semester program, students receive the preparation necessary to seek out a career in welding. To enter into the program, students must be at least 18 years old or older. The program requires 47-48 credits of coursework on topics like pipe welding, welding quality control, welding metallurgy and machine lab.
Northern Virginia Community College
In Annandale, the Northern Virginia Community College has a program that results in a welding career studies certificate. The first semester of the program has an introduction to welding class and an arc welding course. Once in the second semester, students learn about welding drawing and interpretation and electric arc welding. Finally, in the last semester of the program, semi automatic welding processes and inert gas welding are studied.
Southside Virginia Community College
Southside Virginia Community College is in the city of Alberta and offers options for a certificate and a career studies certificate to welding majors. The standard certificate program is 33 to 34 credits while the career studies certificate program is about half that length. The guidelines for the program have been set by the American Welding Society. Students in both programs go over welding styles like arc, gas metal arc, and inert gas. In the certificate program, students are also educated on oxy-acetylene welding and brazing and pipe welding.
Thomas Nelson Community College
Located in Hampton, Thomas Nelson Community College is home to a career studies certificate program in welding. In addition to a course on technical mathematics, this program offers classes in gas inert gas welding, oxy-fuel cutting and welding, basic and advanced shielded metal arc welding and gas metal arc welding. In total, students earn at least 23 credits completing this program.
Tidewater Community College
Found in Norfolk, students at Tidewater Community College can earn a certificate or a career studies certificate in welding. The career studies certificate option requires 26 credits worth of work while the certificate program is at least 33 credits. Each program can be completed in 3 semesters and similar welding courses are taken in each program. Students can learn about shielded metal arc welding, inert gas welding, welder qualification tests, welding drawing and interpretation and tube and pipe welding.
Virginia Western Community College
Roanoke is where the Virginia Western Community College resides and students there can obtain a welding career studies certificate. This is a 17 credit program and it is intended for entry-level welding. Students first learn about industrial safety and blueprint reading. From there, students are introduced to welding metallurgy, inert gas welding and arc welding.
