Schools and Programs
Welding students in Pennsylvania can choose to pursue a certificate or associate's degree. These types of studies are mainly offered at community colleges. Certificates can usually be earned in less than one year. Associate degree students will take general education courses that could include communications and mathematics. Hands-on training labs typically accompany welding classes. Graduates are prepared to take professional certification exams. Some schools offer flexible day and evening welding classes. Community College of Allegheny County's Welding Programs
Established in 1966, the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) consists of four campuses and six centers in and around Pittsburgh. The college has an annual enrollment of more than 62,000 credit and non-credit students. CCAC offers both a certificate and associate's degree program in welding technology. Day and evening classes in this program are conducted at the West Hills Center on the North Campus in suburban McCandless, Pennsylvania.
Welding Technology Certificate
The 18-credit certificate program prepares students for entry-level positions in welding. The curriculum provides fundamental and advanced courses in welding. Blueprint reading, blazing, and several types of arc welding are also addressed. Students who complete this program are eligible to take the certification exam given by the American Welding Society.
Associate of Science in Welding Technology
The Associate of Science (A.S.) program prepares students for advanced or supervisory positions in welding. Program coursework covers basic and advanced pipe welding, welding basics, inspection, safety and flux-core arc welding. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take several types of welding certification exams.

Delaware County Community College's Welding Program
Delaware County Community College (DCCC) was founded in 1967 and has locations in both Delaware and Chester counties. Approximately 11,000 students are enrolled in DCCC's certificate and associate's degree programs. The certificate in welding is offered under the manufacturing program conducted by DCCC's Department of Technical Education at the college's main campus in Media.
Certificate of Competency in Welding
Many of the courses offered in this 28-credit program combine lectures, demonstrations and hands-on labs. Students receive instruction and practice in several welding methods, such as shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and oxy-fuel welding. Cutting techniques and safety procedures are also covered. Elective courses can be taken in welding design, welding codes, inspection or soldering.
