San Diego Schools with Welding Programs

Those looking for formal training in welding can turn to three schools located within 40 minutes of downtown San Diego. This article focuses on the courses and skills taught at the institutions. To get information about the schools beyond their program offerings, be sure to look over the table of facts and figures. It covers details on costs, campus setting and more.

  • Several welding courses are offered at the Center for Employment Training - San Diego, which is about four miles from the downtown area.
  • About five miles out from the city center is San Diego Continuing Education. A pipe welding program and a structural welding program are available there.
  • Several certificate and associate degree programs in welding can be pursued at Palomar College, including those focused on shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and welding technology. This school is located around 37 miles from central San Diego.

Center for Employment Training - San Diego

The classes at this school are designed to help students enter into an entry-level career after graduation.

Welding Courses

The gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux cored arc welding (FCAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and oxy-fuel welding processes can be learned at this school. Along with these processes, students learn how to properly set-up, maintain and use welding equipment, tools and materials. In addition to the welding information covered in this program, students are required to learn about blueprint interpretation, shop math, shop English and shop safety. Job searching skills can also be acquired at this school.

San Diego Continuing Education

Each welding program offered here can be completed in 48 to 52 weeks. These programs are each 1,200 hours in length.

Structural Welding Program

There are morning and evening course options available to students in this structural welding program. As part of this program's curriculum, students learn how to solve math problems important to welding, as well as how to read and understand blueprints. SMAW and FCAW are the two welding processes examined in this program.

Pipe Welding Program

The instruction for this program is based off of the American Welding Society's and American Petroleum Institute's industry standards. It is important for students to understand the safe and proper use of welding equipment in this program since students receive hands-on experience in this program. GTAW and SMAW are the two processes studied by students.

Palomar College

Relevant programs at this college are offered through the welding technology department. The department focuses on both singular and group welding techniques, and receives its equipment from the distributor Airgas.

Certificate of Proficiency in Entry-Level Gas Metal Arc and Flux Cored Arc Welding

At the start of this program, students learn about technical mathematics and welding. Gas metal arc and flux colored arc welding is one of the major required classes in this program. Towards the end of the program, students study metal layout for fabrication and print reading for welders. In total, this program is made up of 15 academic units.

Certificate of Proficiency in Entry-Level Gas Tungsten Arc Welding

Like the previous program, this certificate is made up of 15 credit units. Courses on welding, metal layout for fabrication, print reading for welders and technical mathematics are also required in this program. The difference between the two certificate programs is that students in this one learn about GTAW in a three-unit course.

Certificate of Proficiency in Entry-Level Shielded Metal Arc Welding

Welding and technical mathematics are the first two required courses in this program. From there, students learn about metal layout for fabrication and print reading for welders. This certificate program is 12 units in length.

Certificate of Achievement in Welding Technology

Depending on the options a student pursue, this certificate program can be completed in 23 to 28 units. The program starts off with courses on welding, technical mathematics, GTAW and SMAW. From there, students can expect to take coursework on metal layout for fabrication, special problems in welding, GMAW, FCAW and print reading for welders. There are also cooperative education experiences available as part of the program.

Associate of Arts in Welding Technology

In addition to the options presented above, there is also an Associate of Arts in Welding Technology degree program available. This program is similar to the Certificate of Achievement in Welding Technology program except that it also allows students to acquire a general education.
