Welding Programs in New York
In New York State, students can find welding programs at community colleges or BOCES (Board of Cooperative Education Services) centers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), general or skills-specific certification may be required for some types of welding, including inspection or robotic work. Some of the programs profiled below may help students acquire certifications from the American Welding Society (AWS), the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA).
In addition to brief overviews of the courses and programs, students will find a comparison table with school info and training costs.
CUNY New York City College of Technology
This Brooklyn-based college is affiliated with the City University of New York (CUNY), and training in welding is available through the Continuing Studies Center. In conjunction with the Construction Technology Center, recent programs have included a 42-hour course in advanced electrical arc welding. Designed to prepare students for the AWS certification exams, the course also provides them with the chance to produce their own welding samples, including angled pipes and surfaces.
Hudson Valley Community College (SUNY)
Hudson Valley Community College is part of the State University of New York (SUNY), and its Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) provides vocational training in welding at the Albany and Troy locations. Students who complete the 400-hour welding program will be eligible for industry certifications from the AWS, the NYSDOT (3/8-inch steel plate) and OSHA (construction safety).
Training topics include those in, among other areas, aluminum, stainless steel and shielded metal arc welding. Students also learn about the different types of welding positions (flat, horizontal and overhead) and receive information about operational safety procedures.
The EOC also offers a welding certification upgrade program for professionals applying for DOT recertification, or for individuals interested in earning an advanced certification through the American Welding Society.
Mohawk Valley Community College (SUNY)
At the Utica campus of this state community college, students can complete a 7-course certificate program in welding that can help to prepare them for the state exam and employment in the field (Fall 2013). This is a team-based, project-oriented program, where students acquire effective communication skills and learn how to solve welding-related problems.
In addition to MIG (metal inert gas) and TIG (tungsten inert gas) procedures, students receive training in oxy-acetylene welding and learn how to interpret blueprints and trade symbols. Unique to the program are electives in blacksmithing and sculpture or welding inspections.
Onondaga Cortland Madison BOCES
Through the Liverpool Career Training Center, students can pursue a welder/fitter training program with a 4-week internship and opportunities for job shadowing. The curriculum is designed in accordance with AWS standards, and qualified graduates will be eligible for certification exams.
Students will become familiar with a variety of techniques, including MIG, TIG, pipe and stick welding. They also learn how to read blueprints and take courses in drafting and shop math.
In general, the 812- hour program can be completed in 25 weeks, and as stated on the school's website, 84% of graduates find immediate placement in the field.
Suffolk County Community College (SUNY)
Suffolk County Community College is a multi-site school on Long Island, and the Corporate Training Center is located in Brentwood. The 180-hour welding course is a combination of site-based and online work and is designed to provide students with training in gas metal, gas tungsten and shielded metal arc welding. Provided they pass the qualifying exams, students may also become certified in the use of 1-inch, 3G and 4G welding. Although class fees cover the cost of books, materials and equipment, students will have to pay additional fees for the certifications.
