Career Requirements

To earn a license as a paramedic in the state of Utah, students have to complete a training program that results in 596 hours of field and clinical experience as well as 610 training hours. Aspiring paramedics must take written and practical paramedic certification examinations offered by the state or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Paramedics must maintain their certification through continuing education or examination.

Dixie State University

The Dixie State University is in Saint George and offers a paramedic certificate and an Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services. A year of field experience is a necessary requirement to enter into the paramedic programs at this school. Applicants to both programs must also complete prerequisites in general education, anatomy and physiology.

Paramedic certificate students learn about proper emergency care procedures. Students also learn about trauma injuries like burns, drug abuse and poisonings. The associate degree program offers both paramedic and general education courses.

University of Utah

The University of Utah in Salt Lake City provides a paramedic program for qualified individuals. Since this program is offered in collaboration with the Salt Lake City Fire Department, applicants don't need to be formally accepted into the university. Applicants must have already had 6 months of healthcare experience. They also need to have completed courses in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and general education. Students participate in clinical shifts that can be scheduled throughout the day.

Utah Valley University

The Utah Valley University is found in Orem and students there can pursue a paramedic certificate program or a bachelor's degree program in emergency services administration. The certificate option for paramedics consists of 4 main paramedic courses, labs and clinical experiences. The certificate program provides 31 credits of courses.

Students who enroll in the bachelor's degree program with an emergency care emphasis take the same paramedic classes that are found in the certificate program. The program also has courses in emergency medical services and health management. Internships are available.
