New Hampshire Cooking Classes

Although a formal education program is not always necessary for employment purposes, cooking classes can be found at both community colleges and 4-year universities in New Hampshire. Learn about the curricula, internships and length of programs with cooking classes at two New Hampshire schools.   • Southern New Hampshire University, in Manchester, offers cooking and baking certificates, an associate's degree in culinary arts and a bachelor's degree in culinary management.
  • Lakes Region Community College is more centrally located, in Laconia. This school offers certificates in baking and pastry arts, restaurant management and institutional food service, in addition to an associate's degree in culinary arts.

Southern New Hampshire University

Established in 1983, SNHU serves about 28,000 students per year who can choose from more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The American Culinary Federation Educational Institute accredits the culinary programs.

Cooking Certificate

Pupils study cooking topics like meat and sauce preparation, cooking technology, baking, sanitation, safety procedures and production costs. Classes are transferable to the associate's degree program.

Baking Certificate

This certificate program includes an introductory baking class, which covers cake decoration, pastry fillings and products made of dough. Other classes include advanced baking and sanitation.

Associate of Science in Culinary Arts

Enrollees explore Italian cuisine, regional American cuisine, nutritional cooking and classical cooking - among other topics. Other classes cover restaurant and dining room management. To complete internship requirements, pupils work in the on-campus restaurant.

Bachelor of Science in Culinary Management

In addition to classes available at the associate's degree level, topics cover business, accounting and consumer behavior. In other classes, students learn to cut meat, bake for special dietary needs, cook without using a recipe, prepare alcoholic beverages, decorate cakes and manage catering operations.

Lakes Region Community College

Lakes Region Community College, founded in 1967, is located in the middle of New Hampshire near Lake Winnipesauke. Approximately 1,200 students attend every year.

Baking and Pastry Certificate

This 16-credit-hour program trains pupils in the creation of breads, rolls, hot and cold desserts, muffins, donuts and pastries. These individuals gain hands-on cooking experience by completing 16-22 lab hours.

Restaurant Management Certificate

Classes in bartending, product costs, banquet and dining room management and marketing are included in this 28-credit program. Enrollees study international cuisine and learn to prepare pastas, meats, salads, appetizers and other restaurants staples.

Institutional Food Service Certificate

Participants explore methods for catering special events through classes in scheduling, client rapport, diet-sensitive cooking, nutrition, management and other topics. A rotation in a restaurant or other hospitality site is required for completion.

Associate of Science in Culinary Arts

Learners train through classes in culinary terminology, sauce preparation, ethnic cuisine and cooking methodology. They prepare a wide range of breads, desserts and nutritious foods using techniques in baking, grilling and steaming.
