Woodworking Classes and Programs in Maryland
Several Maryland schools offer art degree programs in which students can study woodworking through sculpture courses. There is also one college that offers a woodcarving course through its continuing education program.
Allegany College of Maryland
This community college in Cumberland offers a beginning woodcarving course at its Maryland campus. The course is offered one evening a week and includes five sessions. Students learn fundamental woodworking skills and have the chance to complete projects of their own in the class. Tools and materials are supplied.
Maryland Institute College of Art
At Baltimore's Maryland Institute College of Art, students in the BFA program in interdisciplinary sculpture can take several courses that deal specifically with wood, such as Introduction to Wood, Green Wood Working and Warped Wood. MFA sculpture students can work on wood-based projects in the studio center wood shop. The college has five different fabrication studios including a wood shop in which students can work with a variety of woodworking tools, including belt sanders, chop saws, a router table and biscuit joiners.
St. Mary's College of Maryland
St. Mary's City is home to St. Mary's College of Maryland, where individuals can study sculpture through the bachelor's degree program in art. An introductory sculpture course allows students the option of creating sculpture from either metal or wood. Techniques in carving, armature construction and sculpting the human form are addressed in this class. Students can also work with wood through advanced sculpture classes and independent studio projects.
This university, located in Towson, offers a bachelor's degree program in art and design with a concentration in sculpture. One of the required courses addresses the process and concept of wood and woodcarving. Other courses in the program cover topics in wood fabrication, woodcarving, figure modeling, metal, drawing and the history of modern design. Sculpture internships are available, and students have the chance to compete in art exhibitions with students from other art schools.
University of Maryland
At the University of Maryland in College Park, both undergraduate and graduate sculpture students have access to a woodshop with an assortment of saws, a joiner, a planer, handheld tools and sanders. One of the undergraduate sculpture courses deals specifically with wood and mixed media. Those who would like to complete work in private studios and participate in an honors seminar might be interested in the school's honors program, which is only offered to a select number of students.
