Northern Michigan University
Northern Michigan University, located in Marquette on the southern shore of Lake Superior, offers woodworking courses through Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree programs. Courses are offered through the school's College of Art and Design, and students learn about turning and bending, milling, cutting, and joinery and greenwood. Tools are provided to students for their first few semesters, but they are expected to have their own tools as they pursue advanced coursework in the field. Students pursuing studies in furniture making or woodworking have access to a recently opened facility that has a variety of tools and machines for woodcrafting.
University of Michigan
Located in Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan is a public school that offers a course covering wood furniture. The course can be taken as an elective within a Bachelor of Fine Arts program. This course can teach students about tools, scale modeling, and materials. Students get to work on 2 pieces of furniture during the latter part of the semester. This elective course may not be available every semester, so students should check with the school's website to find out when the course will be offered next.
Western Michigan University
Western Michigan University is located in Kalamazoo and offers a woodworking apprentice program that has limited enrollment. The program teaches students about woodworking fundamentals, furniture making, and traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Students begin with defined projects and move on to advanced projects that give them more freedom. This program requires students to commit 8-10 hours a week to woodworking studies, and they may be required to maintain the equipment in the woodshop facility throughout the program.
