The Creative Writing Program at the Emory College of Arts and Sciences is where the bachelor's programs related to writing are found. About 12 faculty members teach creative writing classes in this program. The individual courses and certificate programs can be found at the Emory Continuing Education division. This division offers a broad range of certificate programs and courses to the public, and it enrolls more than 10,000 students annually.

Creative Writing Courses

Emory offers individual creative writing classes to people looking to focus on a specific area of writing. Topics may include novel writing, poetry, writing basics, dramatic writing and copy editing. Tuition prices differ for each class and may range between $175 and $425.

Business Writing Courses

Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and Theater Studies

This degree program is offered in partnership with the Creative Writing Program and the Theater Studies Department. Master of Arts in English with a Concentration in Rhetoric and Composition

This program has similar admission requirements as the creative writing concentration, except a writing sample instead of a portfolio is required. Students complete 10 classes, 6 credits of research and a 40-60-page thesis or digital media project. A few of the classes cover topics in research methods, technical writing and digital publishing. Most students finish the program in 2-3 years, and they must finish within 7 years.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a Concentration in Fiction

This program leads to the terminal degree for the creative writing discipline. This program can help students in their writing careers or help them obtain university-level teaching jobs. In the fiction option, students complete 15-21 credits of fiction writing classes, 15-21 credits of English and American literary classes, 3 credits of theoretical classes, 3 credits of contemporary fiction and 6 credits of thesis research. A comprehensive exam and a thesis are required to graduate.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a Concentration in Poetry

The poetry option also prepares students for advanced teaching and writing careers. It requires 15-21 credits of poetry writing coursework, 9-15 credits of English and American literature classes, 6 credits of 20th century American and British poetry classes, 3 credits of theoretical classes, 3 credits of contemporary poetry and 6 credits of thesis research. Completing a thesis and passing a comprehensive exam are also required. The program can typically be completed within 3-4 years.

Doctor of Philosophy in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing

The PhD program is designed to prepare graduates for professor and researcher positions. Admission requires a master's degree in English or a related field. This concentration also requires students to submit a portfolio and an analytical writing sample. Students choose a primary focus in either fiction or poetry; the option not chosen for the primary focus becomes the student's secondary focus. Students complete 30-39 credits of coursework and 20 hours of dissertation research. After completing their courses, student must pass 2 exams.

Doctor of Philosophy in English with a Concentration in Rhetoric and Composition

Admission to this concentration is the same as the creative writing option, except applicants don't need to submit a portfolio. Students may complete classes in writing pedagogy, 17th century rhetoric and scholastic publication. The 2 doctoral exams consist of 72-hour off-site exams. The program concludes with the student's oral dissertation defense. PhD students typically complete the program in 4-6 years, and they must finish within 10 years.

Programs at Savannah College of Art and Design

The writing programs are part of the School of Liberal Arts at SCAD. These programs are geared toward nonfiction writing and aimed at preparing students for a more technically advanced writing industry. At the Atlanta campus, the writing classes are held in the Ivy Hall.

Writing Courses

SCAD offers individual courses and workshops in a variety of fields, including writing. Classes vary throughout the year and can range in length and cost. Topics include ekphrastic poetry, short story writing and book writing. Some courses may be offered online.
